Chimps stand silent to mourn friend – The West Australian

Mourning a friend Lest we think we are the only ones that have emotion and mourn the loss of a friend or a loved one.   We are not the only sentient beings that feel emotion.  Our emotions may be deeper, longer lasting because of how God created us, but we are not alone in having the ability to feel loss, joy, sadness or happiness.

We were burying Dorothy," she said. "We brought her in the wheelbarrow to let the others see.

"I cannot emphasise enough how silent and still they were. Chimpanzees are typically not like that.

"They are loud, with short attention spans. It was unbelievably emotional. We were all struck."

A Tale of Two Cockies – An Aussie Love Story

A friend shared the following with me.  What a beautiful story.

A Tale of Two Cockies
A Story of Love, Compassion, Friendship & Loyalty

About eight years ago a wild Australian Sulphur Crested Cockatoo flew into a car and broke its wing. The motorist took it to the Vet in Nerang, Queensland, who had to amputate the wing. We adopted her – for which we needed a National Parks and Wildlife permit – and kept her in a cage outside where she was often visited by wild Cockatoos. One of the things that impressed us was how she would push lettuce leaves through the bars of the cage, offering food to visitors.

Animal Intelligence

Ducky June 2009 Peets 13

Sitting outside on the porch yesterday morning, enjoying a cup of coffee, I had the three little birds (2 parakeets & a parrotlet) in their cage which I put in a large cage for their safety.  It has a somewhat complicated latch.  My macaw (pictured here) was outside with me.  He was wandering around and climbed up on the big cage.  He wanted in.  I did not want him in there so he took matters into his own hands, or should I say beak.  What he proceeded to do simply stunned me.  Animal intelligence underestimated!

Milk does a body good? Oh really?

Well, I did say this was going to be a hodgepodge blog.  :)

All milk is not the same.  I cannot drink mil, or so I thought.  As far back as I can remember, I have been unable to drink milk. Growing up, it was part of the culture to drink a glass of milk with dinner. I was not given a choice, my parents required us to drink our glass of milk. No one was able to attribute the issues I had to milk.

Interspecies Relationships

Orangatan & dog 1

Picking up any newspaper or watching any news on television, we are bombarded with images and news of humans destroying each other.  Countries go to war and  people murder each other.

While our world marches on in her violence, there’s a softer and gentler side and and we can see that in the animal world if only we would stop and pay attention.  In a previous post, I talked about how my little parrotlet tried to move in with the parakeets (here) but I stopped it for parrotlets have the ability to harm parakeets.  They are, after all, different species.

Pippy the Little Sparrow

Pippy 3-1

mon ami,

I wanted to remember the little sparrow that came into my life for such a short time.  I have a new bird, a little parrotlet who I named after this little guy.

You were here just a short time.  Your siblings are all gone now, they grew up and are now living the life of sparrows.  You never had that chance  for you fell from your nest and I happened to come into your life.  The time you were with me was special.  I took you to work so that I could feed you every two hours.  This is an experience that I will always treasure.

You’ve been gone for a while now.  When a little sparrow lands in my yard, I stop for a moment and remember you.  My little parotlett, who I named Pippy in remembrance of you, is a sweet little thing and is just a little bit bigger than you had you lived and grown up.

I hope that while you were with me for that little time, you at least felt safe and were comfortable.

Sneaky little bugger

mon ami,

Well Pippy, my little parrotlet, is a sneaky little bugger.  She snuck into the cage with the parakeets, Fred & Ethel.  Fred and Ethel’s cage door was open so they could come and go as they please.  Fred, Ethel & Pippy

While I was away in the other room, apparently Pippy made her way to Fred and Ethel and climbed into their cage and made herself at home.  When I returned , I could not find Pippy and sort of had a panic attack wondering what happened to her.

Strange Environment

mon ami,

Pippy was sitting on tip of her cage relaxing.  She’s still nervous in her new surroundings.  I was over there patting her and she was opening up her little mouth to bite me.  I let her bite me but she wasn’t rough.  I was looking at her little body that is no more than a 2-3 inches.  Her bite was not meant to hurt me but to warn me that she’s scared.

New Addition

Mon Ami,

We have a new addition to our home, a sweet little parrotlet.  I named her Pippy after the little sparrow that was with me for a very short time.  abtparrotlet

The photo is not Pippy but another little parrotlet.  I have not had a chance to take a photo of her but she looks just like the little guy in this photo.
